About

In ancient times, Kukui oil was used to light torches for fishermen and travelers. A lighthouse once stood in Iwilei, illuminating the way for approaching ships to Honolulu. This was an industrial and commercial area that served as a leading example for Hawai‘i’s developing urban core.

Today, it still is. Nā Lama Kukui (“The Kukui Torches”) carries forth that spirit of wayfinding–of visitors to this place, of kanaka and kama‘ainā connecting to Hawai‘i’s past, and of looking forward and forging ahead as a community together. Our logo is a symbol of fire, meant to evoke the guiding light of enlightenment and progress.
